Communities thrive when arts organisations, businesses and local government work together. Read on to discover how the Plaza Theatre in Romsey uses TicketSource, the online ticket-selling platform, to manage innovative partnerships that enrich the town’s cultural life.

The Plaza Theatre, a stylish 231-seater theatre converted from an art deco cinema, is the home of Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS). Established in 1934, RAODS is a well-supported community organisation with 400 members, offering a varied programme of plays, musicals, live music and pantomime by staging their own productions every month as well as welcoming visiting companies to the venue.

RAODS switched to TicketSource in 2011. “Before then, it was all paper tickets,” explained Alan Rimmer, Box Office and Front-of-House Manager. “We sold tickets from our own box office and through the local Visitor Information Centre, so there was a lot of liaison on show days and big stacks of tickets waiting for collection. The process was a bit of a nightmare.” Automating the ticket sales with TicketSource enabled RAODS to give the council-run Visitor Information Centre direct access to the theatre’s online account.

“It’s really handy for us,” said Rimmer. “The centre is open six days a week in the heart of the town and they get a lot of local custom. We also publicise their phone number in our literature. They do a really good job – we give them a small commission on ticket sales and it’s a price worth paying.”

In 2018, RAODS struck up another local partnership with Koh Thai, a popular Thai restaurant less than half a mile from the theatre. Using the sundry items feature on TicketSource, RAODS set up a pre-theatre meal deal. “You get a starter and a main at a discounted price in the restaurant,” said Rimmer. “And then, when you come to see the show, you get a free ice cream as your dessert!”

Whether purchasing online or through the Visitor Information Centre, audience members have the option to select the meal deal at the same time as booking their seats, with the voucher printed automatically on the ticket. “It works well for us and it’s brilliant for our customers,” explained Rimmer. “Both myself and the restaurant have been surprised at how popular it’s become. Everybody who’s used the deal has been very complimentary about it.”

Using online solutions provided by TicketSource, the Plaza Theatre is pioneering creative collaborations with businesses and the local council in Romsey – for the ongoing benefit of residents and visitors to this historic Hampshire market town.
